Our friends over at Shriners Hospitals for Children have published some create tips about backpack safety for our kids!
It’s back-to-school time for kids, but the first important lesson of the year starts at home. Now is the time to learn how to select the right backpack for your child so they can be safe, healthy, and happy ― at school and beyond.
Backpacks are a great way to carry all the books, supplies, snacks, and other personal items your child will need throughout the day. They’re designed to distribute the weight of the load among some of the body’s strongest muscles, and when fitted properly, they do their job well! But backpacks that are too heavy or are carried incorrectly can injure muscles or joints and contribute to back pain and other problems.
Here are a few tips: First, make sure you buy your child the right bag for their size and daily load. Then have a conversation with them about proper usage, ensuring that they only carry what they need to prevent an overloaded bag, and that they wear their bag correctly to prevent injury.
Since our first hospital opened its doors in 1922, providing care for pediatric orthopaedic conditions has been a foundation of Shriners Hospitals for Children® ― that’s why we’re spreading awareness of School Backpack Awareness Day and the importance of backpack basics.
Please help make sure the children you know and love are taking care of their bodies!
